East or Further East?

Oh, what a crazy past few months it has been, indeed!  Who knew plans could change so drastically in so little time?!

I was super excited about heading to India for three months to teach photography with an organization called Fairmail.  I would’ve been working with “less fortunate” (I hate that term) kids in a small town called Varanasi.  The organization takes the best photos the kids take, and turns them into postcards to sell, which the kids then get profit from for education and living expenses.  It’s really kind of a neat concept, and I was super excited to be accepted as a teacher with them.

Buuuuut, now I’m not going.   At least for now.   One day I will, it’s definitely something that has been in my heart for a while now!  The reason?

Belfast.  Aye, probably the only that could’ve changed my mind, ha!  I applied for a Masters program in Belfast earlier this year, not fully expecting to get accepted… When I didn’t hear back, I made the plans for India.  Then out of the blue I got an acceptance letter (like 5 weeks before the course started!), and that’s when the terrible week of contemplation and decision making ensued.

Yeah, I ended up picking Belfast.  And I definitely feel bad about having to pull out of India (not to mention having bought a non-refundable ticket, arg!), but I think it was the right decision…  It’s incredibly crazy last minute, but it seems that it is what I have been, essentially, wanting since I got back in January and the timing and way it worked out seems to be kind of a “God thing”.  So, it pleases me to say that it appears that I will be spending the next season in Belfast again, and I am super excited to see what’s ahead!! Not to mention living in the same place as some of my favourite people again!!

The program is at the same university I studied at before, which will result in a MA Multidisciplinary Design… I’m (hopefully) going to focus research/skills/study on the relation of photography and graphic design, particularly in relation to advertising.  I’ve always found “surrealistic” images incredibly interesting, and I think it would be rather interested to look into their effectiveness as a means of visual communication design, both in theory and practice.  So that leaves me having to write a research proposal (for which this blog is a means of procrastinated, ha!).

So yes – barring the conquering of certain visa issues – I will be moving back to Belfast for another year and a half… next month!  And India, I am coming for you next!!

Degrees, planes, and plans.

Ahoy!  Much time has past since my last post, and much news has been made!

So, new goal for the summer!  Update at least once a week.  There should be lots of exciting things happening, so I’m definitely looking forward to them!  Until then, I feel a bit of catching up is in order…

The biggest of which I reckon is my graduation!  It was sort of last minute (my spontaneity is taking over, I know), but it was really lovely and I now officially have a Bachelor of Arts in Design Studies in Digital Visualization – hooray!  We were blessed to have it all work out so that I was even able to go back home for a couple weeks for the commencement/convocation ceremonies and celebrations and such.  The commencement was ridiculously crowded, with Obama being the key speaker, but I think it went really well (and even included a “surprise” appearance from Alice Cooper… ha!).  Also, it was lovely to see family/friends/furry things, and I was able to be back for (the evening of, anyway) Caleb’s 21st.

Things are well at home overall, which is good.  Caleb, on his birthday of all days, officially withdrew from his university course (Er… Game Design?), because now he’s unsure what he wants to do, and is planning some sort of major switch – seems to be a common theme in the family, eh?  Haha

In other news, my family has officially booked their tickets for their summer visit here!  They’ll be arriving on the 22nd of June, then we’ll do a bit of Ireland/UK travel.  My brother and mom will leave on the 7th of July, at which point my dad and I will venture on to some other (undecided as of yet) European destination for another week or so.  It should be a lot of fun, and I’m looking forward to showing them a bit of the culture I’ve come to know and live with!

Aside from that, my summer plans are officially… well, not made.  Haha, my lease here is up at the end of this month, and I have no idea what I’m doing after that.  I think the plan is to stay here – either Belfast or UK – until sometime in Septemeber or so.  I was going to do a learn Spanish program in Spain, but that’s recently shifted to attempting to find an internship or temporary job in photo or design field.  I hope to have something decided by sometime next week or so.  Basically, I have no idea.  I s’pose that’s half of the fun, but I probably should get cracking and start making some decisions here, ha.

Also, re: Germany trip – Awesome!  This is the post I had started after I returned…

The great mother-daughter tour-de-Germany went rather swimmingly!  We met in Munich, where we later ventured to Fussen, Wurzburg, and Berlin.  Also, we somehow managed to do so using public transport to successfully reach each of the aformentioned destinations in a timely fashion (by timely of course, I am refering merely to the lack of back-tracking, not length of time.  12 hours on a train is by no means timely in my book.).  Shocking, I know!

…And then I never finished it.  Brilliant, right?  You can, however, see a selection of photos under the “Europe” section of my photo gallery (or just click here).  Oh, and the photo above is of the line that marks the spot where the Berlin Wall used to be.  There’s so much history in all the German places we visited, it’s fascinating – perhaps one day I will get around to a proper, complete update.  Perhaps!

Also!  While I was home, I got a new camera.  It’s partially a graduation gift from my parents, and partially a graduation gift to myself, and mostly to use for when I get back and attempt to start my own photo/design business type deal.  It’s a Canon 5d Mark II – a lovely little (er, big, I guess) thing, which still remains nameless.  Suggestions?

Also, my photo a day project is still going strong – today will be day 148 – hooray! Check it out at http://azchick.com/photoblog/

Brrrr.

Alas, I have found a place to live!  Actually, it didn’t take that long.  I s’pose when stashing things in hostels and trying to keep an eye on my abundance of electronics it seemed like longer than it was.  Anyway, it’s a shared flat (with 5 other people, who’ve been helpful as far as finding things/getting settled) and it’s not terribly far from the city centre/campus I will be attending.  I’m on the third floor and have a lovely large window that looks out on the street (second photo).  There’s a common area/kitchen/living room type place as well.  It’s nothing terribly fancy, just a simple room with a nice location (the coffee shops I’ve come to like are right nearby as well, which is swell!).

It’s been pretty chilly here, and by that I mean in the mid 30’s.  It snow-rained a couple times last week, but then was sunny all day today, so it’s a bit sporadic.  I s’pose that’s Ireland weather for ya’!

Classes start next week, and while I’m still not certain of the courses I will be taking, they will be something having to do with graphic design… hopefully the specifics of that will be confirmed shortly!

On another note, I went to a little cafe-type-place earlier today and ordered nachos (because I am hopelessly addicted to Mexican food), and I’m pretty sure what they gave me was basically just nacho-flavoured Doritos with melted cheese, which I found pretty funny (actually, they didn’t taste THAT awful, they just didn’t qualify as “nachos” in my book).  I s’pose I should stop searching out burritos and start embracing potatoes and fish and chips.  And tea.
