Church and the World’s Ugliest Dog

Monday, August 28th, 2006

I had an interesting experience when I went to church last night.

Here I was, walking to the front doors from the parking lot. Now, keep in mind, this is a fairly large church, so there are tons of people outside mingling and doing other stuff. Several boys, in particular, who were playing basketball. This one kid tells his friends that he’s going to shoot a basket from behind the goal…
So anyways, I’m just minding my own business, walking along… When all of a sudden everyone’s like “Watch Out!” “Look out!” “Ma’am!!” and waving their hands frantically. I’m thinking to myself “Ha! The kid missed and is about to hit a lady in the head”.

And then the basketball slams into my head…

See, under normal circumstances I would have coward or ducked at the fear of danger (really… ask Krystal, haha!), but I didn’t see any possible way that the ball could have ended up propelled in my direction.

So that makes the third church I’ve been hit in the head by a basketball.
-RCC at a basketball game
-TCC when the kids thought it would be funny to throw a basketball over the puppet stage
And now
-Cornerstone, when a basketball shot went awry.

Everyone was like “Oh my gosh, are you okay?” and “Oh that’s gotta hurt!”, and all I could do was laugh. Hahaha. I have thus concluded that I laugh entirely too much…

Anyways – on to more exciting things. Like the world’s ugliest dog!

His name is Archie, and he was “visiting” Cornerstone a week or so ago. Haha, they said they got 800 more visitors from the dog than from some nationally known football star (whom costed quite a bit more to have speak…).

For those of you who question my severe dislike of little dogs, ask no more…

Flip Flotsam

Saturday, August 5th, 2006

I watched this crazy cool documentary on TV the other day. It was called “Flip Flotsam” and it showed the “flip flop circle of life”. And since I’m a flip flop extraordinaire, I enjoyed it immensely! :)

Anyways, it talked about the life of flip flops in East Africa. There’s a factory in Kenya (somewhere that starts with an M… Momba?) that makes tons of flip flops (in lovely colours!) every year as an export item, and apparently flip flops are crazy popular over there, so lots of people buy them.

Well, once the flip flops get fairly worn out (and even the flip-flop-fixer guy can’t fix them), they just get thrown like in some trash dump or even on the side of a street. Then comes Monsoon season, and lots of them get washed out into the ocean, where, since the flip flops float, they become little surfboards for swimming crabs and other animals – how cool is that?!

That’s not all though… Because of ocean currents and such, a lot of the flip flops end up on an island off Kenya – it looked like the whole beach was literally littered with them! (I found this photo on google – from here)
Wow

From there, local people gather the flip flops to make toys and such for the kids. It was so cool! They cut the flip flops up into little like sea animals and birds and boats and the like, using the vibrant colours to make them detailed and such! Most of these little toys then travelled back to where they started (the M place) and are sold.

How cool is that?! Or maybe I’m just easily amused… Haha. So anyways, they made it look easy, so I decided to try to make a little “toy” from a pair of my plethora of old flip flops. The result? Well, let’s just say it’s definitely not as easy as it looks… and I think I nearly chopped my finger off more than once!

The flip flop remains

And I ended up donating fishy to my crabs! Haha :)

I hope everyone else is having a slightly more eventfull summer than I! :)
