Canada

Monday, September 10th, 2007

Hello! I have been in Canada for… oh about a week and a half now, I believe. Classes started last Monday, and mom and dad left last Tuesday. Before I say anymore, I’ve been meaning to post this:

During our drive up here, I concocted a bit of a “Traveler’s FYI”, and I’ve been meaning to post it. So, without further adieu…

  • Do not attempt to pump your own gas in Oregon, as you may be subject to a large fine.
  • Elk have a tendency to “suddenly appear” throughout Northern California.
  • Read parking signs carefully in San Francisco.
  • San Francisco can be a very stressful city (especially if you neglect the aforementioned bullet).
  • According to Glenn (a somewhat estranged hostel-stayer) – “Life is propaganda. Bush is propaganda. Heck, being human being is not real. It’s a killer. Praise be to alcohol!” …Whatever that means.
  • There is an art to the perfect U-turn.
  • Canada takes their hedges seriously.
  • Cheese and hot sauce are apparently not a staple food in Canadian households.

Anyway, back to Canada. It’s really beautiful up here! I uploaded some photos from around Vancouver as well as our trip to Victoria, so check those out if you have a moment. (To open the photo gallery in a new window, click here!)

Classes are okay! As of now I am taking Intro to Photography, Studio One, and 2 Art History courses (which have not completely been set in stone… they will be either Aspects of Asian Art, Modern and Contemporary Art, or Methods in Art History; yippee…). I was in an English course but decided to drop it as I was confused after the first class (namely, I still have no idea what the course instructor actually intended to teach… though I’ll admit the lecture on conceptual metaphors last week was most oddly intriguing!). Anyway, I have a feeling the Studio One course will be the most difficult. The professor said there will be an emphasis on drawing, which I have a feeling is soon to become my arch-enemy. Our first homework assignment was to choose and draw an item that would fit in our hand and is somehow important to us. I chose my camera, and, well… Here:

I couldn’t get the darn circles straight to save my life! Ah, well.

Anyway. Let’s see… what other college-y stuff. Oh, my roommate’s name is Amy. She’s from Oregon. We seem to get along just dandily, with our mutual “love” for words and appreciate of Doctor Who… Ha!

Alright, I believe that’s all I have to say for now! My website has been kind of spastic (or perhaps it’s my connection), and basically I can only sporadically access my site; crazy! Oh well.

Have a fantastic week!
