Exciting School Stuff (followed by boring school stuff).

Ahoy, school has begun once again! Before I ramble on cynically about ASU, I have a bit of exciting news re: next year!

After switching majors to “Design Studies in Digital Visualization” (which I’m in now), my anticipated graduation date was bumped to Spring ‘09. This would’ve left a year on my tuition waiver unused… so I’ve decided to use it. Which means I don’t graduate until Spring ‘10. BUT, I will not be spending it at ASU (God forbid!).

I’m applying to study abroad at the University of Ulster in Northern Ireland!

They offer quite a few design/photo based courses, so I’m really excited about the opportunity to study there. The campus I would be at is actually in Belfast, which is kind of cool (high-five, by the way, to anyone who can tell me what an “Elkman” – their mascot – is). Initially I was thinking I would go next Fall, however it looks like I will in fact be going in January. Yes, this January!! There are still a few kinks to work out, and confirmations to be had, but I’m still pretty stoked about it overall!

Anyway, back to current classes, which started Monday (prepare yourself for cynicism and complaining). I guess overall they’re not bad so far. I mean, other than the fact that my first class consisted of spackling and repainting the room, and my second professor sort of made me feel lowly because I’m not an art/photo major. Fun stuff! Seriously though, I’m just frustrated with ASU on a whole, it seems like none of the professors, advisers, etc. are on the same page, which is pretty much just confusing and irritating. Heads up to anyone planning to go to ASU – get everything in writing! And keeps copies of important graduation-related papers. Lots of copies.

Three… it’s a magic number.

1. This is why I do not miss North Carolina. (The sad thing is, I’m pretty sure we drove by it at least 4 or 5 times before I actually noticed it.)

2. This is why I should not be allowed to have sugar cubes, let alone eat them. (This is from the epically boring summer of 2005; it’s a replica of our old Victorian house. The sad thing on this one, is that if the cubes were pink, it’s actually sort of not that far off.)

3. And this is why this term will surely not lack in things to do.

Oh, and if things work out as I hope/anticipate… Next semester/year should be really, really, fantastic. We shall see.

In other news – I got up substantially early this morning to substitute for a junior high class at the school’s Queen Creek campus. It’s literally like in the middle of nowhere, yet the street manages to have a ridiculously impossible amount of traffic; I seriously don’t get it. So basically my day consisted of kids. Lots of kids. And tomorrow promises to be filled with many more little people, but this time they’ll be running around with baseball bats. Fun stuff.

Flagstaff and Such

Sports season is starting up again, which means my Saturdays are once again filled with loud children and photo-taking; fun stuff. I had a shoot in Flagstaff on Saturday, so my parents tagged along and we stayed the night. The weather was a nice change, though it started pouring down rain in the afternoon, literally minutes after we were done shooting. Talk about close timing! Anyway, I’m not a huge fan of Flagstaff, but it was a nice change of scenery. And now I’m quite sore from squatting up and down for 19 rolls worth of photos. Oucchh.

Oh, and I found this fun little squishy pig thing at the dollar store, and for whatever reason, I found it really amusing. Plus, it’s filled with air, so it’s safe to use as a stress ball. Unlike those little squishy liquid-filled tubes that can be catastrophic to computers if the user is over-stressed.

On the way back, we stopped at my grandparent’s house to celebrate their anniversary and my grandma’s birthday.

They have quite a little zoo of animals (okay, maybe not that many), including a new cat and a new-ish little dog, who does this adorable little head-turned-to-the-side thing. Also, he’s clearly a lap dog!

Also, my Aunt has a Harley bike, so clearly my dad had to try it out (complete with the Hitler-helmit).
