Tall Ships

Friday, August 14th, 2009

We’ve had this thing in Belfast for the past few days called the Tall Ships.  Basically, lots of piratey ships came and invaded the Lagan, hence attracting hoards of crowds.  It was cool for the first five minutes, until my flip-flop-wearing-feet got run over by three strollers and one wheelchair, at which point I grabbed some Dinky Donuts (SO GOOD!) and pretty much fled.  Haha, no, it was a unique thing to see though.  I guess it was also part of some sort of challenge, where the boats have travelled across the Atlantic some 7000 miles before ending in Belfast.  Hurrah for them.

There was also a stunt airplane person (sponsored by Red Bull… clever marketing there with the whole “Red Bull gives you wings” thing, eh?), so that was cool too.  He flew around the cranes and did some other show-offy stuff.

The best part was that it totally didn’t rain (though the clouds were threatening, as you can see!).  So, that was pretty superb.

Meteor Showers + Rocking Nations

Ahoy!

Did anyone else attempt to see the meteor shower the other night??  I hear the skies lacked clarity in AZ, which is quite ironic.  Like, the one day a year you want to see the sky, the clouds cover it, go figure.  Ha.  Anyway, despite a bit of a notsome-sickness-thing, I decided to attempt to see some of these aforementioned showering meteors.  I went with a couple of friends, Naomi and Murph, a bit out of Belfast away from the city lights for a better view.  While it was a wee bit cloudy, we still saw quite a few, and they were lovely!  I think we ended up seeing something around 40 between us, and some were super bright!

I’ll be honest here, and admit that my night-fu-photo-skills are not exactly up to par (also, I do not like tripods, and lack of light pretty much makes them a necessity, lame!).  So, there’s not really much photographic evidence aside from this (and a few more that look pretty much identical to it).  I’m thinking the photo is not so much of meteors, just 30 seconds of the earth’s rotation in the form of streaming starlight.  But, you can pretend they’re meteors anyway. ;)

In other news, I made a bit of a last minute decision the other week to join a bunch of young-ish people from church in heading over to Bradford, England for a youth conference type thing, called Rocknations.  The church I’ve been going to here in Belfast (Abundant Life)  is one of three campuses of the church, the original/largest being in Bradford, where this was held.  Anyway, there were two guest speakers accompanying the ALC folk, one of which was a lady named Nancy Alcorn who was from Tennessee.  I had to try really hard not to laugh every time she spoke, because she had a seriously Southern accent.  I don’t know why I found it so amusing considering I spent a large portion of my life living in a Southern-accent-filled-region, but I did nonetheless.  Also, it made me really want a Bojangle’s biscuit.  Mmmm.  Phil Dooley (from the Hillsong bunch) was the other, who was really brilliant – super down to earth and really inspiring when he shared his heart.  Look him up on youtube or something, haha.  Anyway, basically the theme was honour (-ing God and others) and reversing the trend by making our generation overcome the stereotype and living with a higher passion.  Good stuff.  Also, lots of energetic worship/music is also nice. :)

While it took me a good day or so for my bitterness re: the cost to dissipate (seriously, Ryanair, HOW MUCH MONEY DOES IT COST YOU TO CHANGE A NAME ON AN EXISTING TICKET??  Good grief.), I quite thoroughly enjoyed it!  It was nice to be able to build on relationships as well, especially since it would seem my return to the desert land is nigh…
